Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Condition of the Alternator Drive Belts
A. Inspect the condition of the alternator drive belts.
B. Check the belt tension. If the engine is equipped with an automatic belt tensioner, check the automatic belt tensioner.
Alternator Belts
Result: Condition of the alternator drive belts is OK.
Result: Belt tension is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: Condition of alternator drive belts NOT OK.
Replace the alternator drive belts.
Result: Belt tension NOT OK.
Replace the automatic belt tensioner.
2. Condition of the Alternator Drive Pulley
A. Check the condition of the alternator drive pulley. Look for deep grooves that have been worn into the pulley by the belt.
B. Check that the nut for the pulley has not become loose.
Alternator Drive Pulley
Result: Alternator drive pulley OK.
Result: Alternator drive pulley nut OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3
Result: Alternator drive pulley NOT OK.
Replace the alternator drive pulley
Result: Torque of the alternator drive nut NOT OK.
Tighten the nut.
3. Wear of the Alternator Bearings
A. Check the alternator bearings for signs of wear.
Alternator Bearings
Result: Alternator bearings OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: Alternator bearings NOT OK.
Repair or replace the alternator.
4. Operation of the Alternator or Regulator
A. Verify that the alternator or the regulator is operating correctly. Refer to Special Instructions, "Charging System Troubleshooting" for the proper testing procedure.

Result: Alternator and regulator OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: Alternator and regulator NOT OK.
Repair or replace the alternator.
5. Inspection of the Charging Circuit
A. Inspect the battery cables, wiring, and connections in the charging circuit. Clean all connections and tighten all connections.
Charging Circuit
Result: Charging circuit OK.
STOP
Result: Charging circuit NOT OK.
Repair any faulty parts
