The following story is from a 225B. The photos and text are typical and not an exact representation of the 225D and 229D; however, the procedures will apply.1. Lower the bucket to the ground with the stick fully extended and the bucket fully opened.
Typical Example2. Fasten a hoist to the rod end of the cylinder. Remove bolts (1) and cap (2).
Typical Example3. Start the engine. Operate the boom control lever until there is no force against the rod end pin. Push pin (3) in until the cylinder rod is free. Operate the boom control lever and move the rod into the cylinder. Stop the engine.
If both boom cylinders are to be removed, follow the procedures in Steps 2 and 3 for the other boom cylinder before any oil lines are disconnected.
4. To release oil pressure in the boom cylinder circuit, slowly open screw (4) 1/2 turn until the oil pressure is released. Tighten the screw. Slowly open the screw on the bottom of manifold (5) 1/2 turn until the oil pressure is released. Tighten the screw. 5. Disconnect oil lines (6) and (7). 6. Fasten a hoist to the other end of the cylinder. Remove bolt (8). 7. Remove the pin with tooling (A). Remove cylinder (9). Weight of the cylinder is 350 kg (775 lb.). The following steps are for the installation of the boom cylinders.8. Fasten a hoist to the cylinder. Install the cylinder and the head end pin with the bolt that holds it.9. Connect oil lines (6) and (7).
If both boom cylinders were removed, follow the procedures in Steps 1 through 2 for the other cylinder before the machine is started.
10. Lift the cylinder until it is in a straight line with the pin in the boom for the rod end. Start the engine. Operate the boom control lever and move the rod out of the cylinder until the bore in the rod is in alignment with the pin in the boom. Push pin (3) back into the bore of the rod.11. Install cap (2) and three bolts (1).Disassemble Boom Cylinders

Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants put into the system may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
1. Fasten a hoist and position cylinder (1) on tool (A).2. Move the rod out of the cylinder until the rod is fully extended.3. Disconnect the oil tube from the head of the cylinder.4. Remove bolts (2). Move the rod, head and the piston away from cylinder (1). 5. Using tooling (B), remove nut (5).6. Remove piston (4) from rod (3). 7. Remove wear ring (6) and seal assembly (7). 8. Move the cylinder and the head together and install two 7/8" - 9 NC bolts (8) eight inches long. Move the rod out of the head. 9. Install two 1/2" - 13 NC forged eyebolts in the head. Fasten a hoist and remove head (9). Weight of the head is 29 kg (65 lb.). 10. Remove stop (10).11. Remove seal
