39. Use tooling (L) to remove bearing cup (56) from the carrier.Assemble Differential
1. Put housing (1) on blocks that are at least 6" (15.2 cm) high. Install six dowels (2) so that they extend .156 .004 in. (3.96 0.10 mm) above the surface.2. Put clean SAE 30 oil on both sides of washer (3). Put washer (3) in position in the housing so that the notches in the washer are in alignment with the pins in the housing. 3. Put gear (4) in position in housing (1). 4. Use tooling (A) and a press to install the bearings in pinion (5). Repeat this step for the three other pinions. 5. Put clean SAE 30 oil on both sides of washers (6) and on the bores of the bearings in each pinion. Put pinions (5) and washers (6) in position on spider (7). 6. Put spider (7) in position in housing (1). Make sure that the notches in each washer (6) are in alignment with the pins in housing (1). 7. Put gear (8) in position on pinion gears (5). 8. Install housing (9). Install four bolts and washers to fasten the two housings together. Put spacer (10) in position in housing (9). 9. Put clean SAE 30 oil on both sides of each disc and plate. Install seven plates (12) and six discs (11). A disc must be between each plate. 10. Install seals (13) and (15) on piston (14) with the lip of the seals out as shown. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on lip of each seal. 11. Put piston (14) in position on the discs and plate. The end of the piston with seals must be away from the discs and plates.12. Install bevel gear (16) on the housing as shown. The weight of the bevel gear is approximately 82 lb. (37 kg). 13. Install two dowels (18) in housing (17). The two dowels must extend .156 .004 in (3.96 0.10 mm) above the surface of the housing.14. Put clean SAE 30 oil on both sides of washer (19). Put washer (19) in position on the housing. Make sure the notches in the washer are in alignment with dowels (18).15. Put 5P960 Multipurpose Type Grease on bore (20). 16. Put housing (17) in position. Piston (14) must be in alignment with bore (20). 17. Install bolts (21). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 320 15 lb.ft. (435 20 N m). Heat bearing cone (22) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install the bearing cone. Make sure it is against its seat after it becomes cool. 18. Turn the differential over. Install the other four bolts (23) that hold the housings together. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 135 10 lb.ft. (184 14 N m). Heat bearing cone (24) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install the bearing cone on the housing. Make sure the bearing cone is against its seat when it becomes cool. 19.
