Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.
Replace the four thermostats on a regular basis in order to reduce the chance of unscheduled downtime and of problems with the cooling system.The thermostats should be replaced after the cooling system has been cleaned. Replace the thermostats while the cooling system is completely drained or while the cooling system coolant is drained to a level that is below the thermostat housing.The thermostats regulate the coolant temperature for the jacket water cooling system. The jacket water cooling system contains 60 percent of the coolant in the cooling system.
Failure to replace the engine's thermostat on a regularly scheduled basis could cause severe engine damage.
Note: If you are only replacing a thermostat, drain the cooling system coolant to a level that is below the thermostat housing.

Remove bracket (2) from the top of regulator housing assembly (3).
Remove elbows (1) and (5) and the gaskets from regulator housing assembly (3).
Disconnect two tube assemblies (4) from the rear of regulator housing assembly (3).
Remove the ten bolts that hold regulator housing assembly (3) to the regulator housing. Remove regulator housing assembly (3) and the housing cover gasket from the regulator housing.
Remove the four lip seals from regulator housing assembly (3).
Remove the water temperature regulators from the regulator housing.
Former water temperature regulators may be used, if they meet the test specifications and are not damaged or have excessive buildup or deposits.
Since Caterpillar engines incorporate a shunt design cooling system, it is mandatory to always operate the engine with a thermostat.Depending on load, failure to operate with a thermostat could result in either an overheating or an overcooling condition.
If the water temperature regulator is installed incorrectly, it will cause the engine to overheat.
Clean all gasket surfaces before assembly. Use all new gaskets and seals.
Install the lip seals with the lip of the seal toward the inside of the regulator assembly.
Verify that the vent valve assembly is not plugged. Install the water temperature regulators into the regulator housing.
Position the housing cover gasket and regulator housing assembly (3) on the regulator housing and install the ten bolts.
Connect two tube assemblies (4) and the gaskets to the rear of regulator housing assembly (3).
Attach elbows (1) and (5) and the gaskets to regulator housing assembly (3).
Install bracket (2) to the top of regulator housing assembly (3).
Refer to the Engine Supplement Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Temperature Regulator - Remove" and the Engine Supplement Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Temperature Regulator - Install" for more information. Fill the engine cooling system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6250, "Caterpillar Machine Fluids Recommendations" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)".
