When a generator is stored for any length of time moisture condenses in the windings. Minimize the condensation by providing a dry storage space.To remove moisture caused by high humidity or dampness, dry the generator by one of the following methods: 1. Place the generator in an oven and bake at a temperature not above 185°F (85°C) for four hours.
If an oven is used for drying, use a forced air type rather than a radiant type. Radiant ovens can cause localized overheating.
2. Enclose the generator and heating lamps in canvas to raise the temperature. Leave an opening in the top for the moisture to escape.3. Pass a low voltage current through the windings to raise the temperature of the windings to 185°F (85°C).If there is a possibility the insulation resistance has deteriorated to a dangerously low level, contact your Caterpillar Dealer.If a brush type generator (SRCR) is to be stored for a prolonged time, lift the brushes off the slip ring to prevent chemical action from damaging the slip ring.
