Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Thoroughly clean all of the components.
Lubricate the piston and the cylinder liner with clean engine oil.
Rotate the crankshaft until the connecting rod journal is at the bottom center. Lubricate the connecting rod journal with clean engine oil.
Install short pieces of rubber hose over both connecting rod bolts in order to protect the crankshaft from the threaded portion of the connecting rod bolts.
Align the tab on the connecting rod bearing with the tab groove on the connecting rod. Install the upper connecting rod bearing in the connecting rod.
Lubricate the bearing for the upper connecting rod journal with clean engine oil.
Align the piston rings on the piston so that the distance between the gaps is 120 degrees.

Install Tooling (A) on the piston.Note: Ensure that Tooling (A) is installed correctly and that the piston can easily slide out of the tool.Note: The arrow or the "FRONT" mark that is on the top of the piston must be toward the front of the engine.
Align the tab on the upper connecting rod bearing with the tab groove on the connecting rod cap. Install the connecting rod bearing in the connecting rod cap.
Carefully push the piston and the connecting rod assembly into the cylinder liner and onto the connecting rod journal.
Remove the rubber hose from the connecting rod bolts.
Lubricate the lower connecting rod bearing with clean engine oil.

Put connecting rod cap (2) in position and install nuts (1) that fasten the connecting rod cap to the connecting rod.
Tighten the connecting rod cap nuts to a torque of 54 N m (40 lb ft).
Rotate the crankshaft in order to ensure that there is no binding.
Repeat Step 2 through Step 14 for the remaining piston and connecting rod assemblies.
Refer to the Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting Module, "Connecting Rod - Inspect" topic for the correct procedure on checking the height of the piston above the cylinder block.

Install oil suction tube (3) onto the cylinder block.Note: Install a new O-ring seal in the hole of the cylinder block when the oil pump inlet tube is removed or replaced. Lubricate the oil suction tube with clean engine oil.
Install bolts (4). Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22 N m (16 lb ft).End By:
Install the engine oil pan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pan - Remove and Install".
Install the lifters. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Lifter Group - Remove and Install".
Install the cylinder head. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Cylinder Head - Install".
