The SAE 967 Calibration Fluid, used in the fuel injection test bench, is the basis for the test specifications for the fuel injection pumps.
The viscosity range of SAE J967 Calibration Fluid is narrow. For accuracy in the tests, the viscosity must be kept in this narrow range.
One way to make sure the viscosity is in the acceptable range is to change the fluid at the necessary intervals.
Caterpillar's recommendation is a change interval of 400 service hours. But, this interval must be made shorter if dirt and debris gets into the fluid during tests.
A better way to find if the fluid needs to be changed, is to check its viscosity. The "Viscor Cup" is available from Viscosity Oil Co., for use when the viscosity of the SAEJ967 Calibration Fluid is checked. Each Viscor Cup has a serial number, and comes complete with instructions. Also necessary for the test but not part of the Viscor Cup, are a thermometer that is divided in 1 degree Fahrenheit intervals and stop watch (time piece) with .2 second accuracy.
Other conditions, including debris that can be seen, color changes and increased foam (bubbles), tell you a change of fluid is necessary.
