Typical Example (Blocking for front frame)
Typical Example (Blocking for front frame)
Use only oak cribbing, positioned securely under the frame, to support the weight of the machine. Do not use jack stands for the removal of the tires & rims unless they are specifically approved by Caterpillar Service Technology Group. Serious personal injury may result.
1. Use a hydraulic jack to raise the appropriate end of the machine and install blocking under the frame, suitable to hold the weight of the machine. The weight of the front or rear end is approximately 90,600 kg (200,000 lb).
Front Tire
Rear Tire
The rear axle will move (oscillate) when components are removed from either side. Install blocking between the frame of the machine and the top of the axle on the same side of the axle from which the tire and rim is being removed. This must be done to prevent personal injury from the rapid movement of the axle when the tire and rim is removed.
a. If the rear tire is being removed, install blocking on the same side as that of the tire that is being removed. Install the blocking between the top of the axle and the frame to prevent any movement of the oscillating axle.2. Attach double chain slings ad a lifting device to the tire, as shown. 3. Remove sixty-one nuts and washers (1) that fasten the rim to the final drive.4. Use the lifting device to remove the tire and rim. The weight of the tire and rim is 5255 kg (11,600 lb). The following steps are for the installation of the tire and rim.5. Use a lifting device to put the tire and rim in position.
When starting nuts (1) on the studs, do not put your arm between the rim and final drive without first placing a block of oak between the rim and final drive. Personal injury may result if the weight shifts and causes movement of the tire and rim.
6. Use a length of oak, as shown, as a lever arm and Air Wrench (B) will all of tooling (A), to install sixty-one washers and nuts (1) in an alternating sequence. 7. Use tooling (A) to tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 1300 200 N m (960 150 lb ft) in an alternating sequence. Turn each nut an additional 120° .5° (1/3 turn). A length of oak may be used as shown in Photo # C37761.a. remove the blocking from between the frame and the top of the oscillating axle (rear axle only)8.
