Information:
ECM determines machine speed by using default information about machine gear ratios and the tire size. The information is used in order to calculate the default machine speed factor. The ECM uses the Transmission Output Speed, and the machine speed factor in order to calculate the machine speed.Changes can be made to the machine that will cause the default machine speed factor to be inaccurate. As an example, if tires that are not standard are installed on the machine, the default machine speed factor may be inaccurate. Components that are installed on the machine that is not original equipment can result in inaccurate machine speed and odometer readings. The machine speed correction factor is intended to accommodate various changes in the default machine speed factor. After the correct machine speed correction factor has been entered into the ECM, the machine speed and odometer readings will be accurate. The value for the machine speed correction factor is programmable by the service personnel. The machine speed correction factor is programmed at the factory to 0%. Use the configuration screen in the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool in order to change the machine speed correction factor. The machine speed correction factor may not be changed unless the machine is stationary. The Machine speed correction factor may be calculated with the following formula:
Actual speed of the machine minus the reported speed of the machine divided by the reported speed of the machine. Then, multiply the total by 100%.The actual speed of the machine is the true speed of the machine. As an example, this speed could be measured with a radar gun. The reported speed of the machine is the speed of the machine as calculated by the ECM. The reported speed of the machine is displayed by the monitoring system and in the Cat ET. The following are two examples of the machine speed correction factor calculation:
The actual speed of the machine is 52 km/h (32.3 mph) and the reported speed of the machine is 50 km/h (31 mph). Then, [(52 km/h - 50 km/h) ÷ 50 km/h] × 100%. The machine speed correction factor is +4.0%
The actual speed of the machine is 48 km/h (30 mph) and the reported speed of the machine is 50 km/h (31 mph). Then, [(48 km/h - 50 km/h) ÷ 50 km/h] × 100%. The machine speed correction factor is −4.0% Typically, if the machine speed correction factor should be used, then documentation will be available that will describe the exact value. So the machine speed correction factor will seldom need to be calculated with the above formula.Note: For 5YW machines that have been retrofitted to 59/80R63 tires, a machine speed correction factor of +4.785 should be used.
