Remove the drain plugs for the final drives. Drain the oil into a suitable container.
Remove the covers from each of the rear wheels.
Remove the axle shafts. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, SENR5691, "Power Train" for the procedure.
Remove any damaged final drive components that may rotate when the machine is towed.

Attach a 8T-0857 Pressure Gauge and a line in the pressure tap at one of the junction blocks. The junction blocks are located in the parking brake release lines.
When towing the machine, attach tow line to the front tow hooks or rear tow pin only.
Hook up the towing machine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Towing the Machine" for the guidelines.
If the steering needs assistance, use a 1U-5000 Auxiliary Power Unit . Refer to Special Instructions, SEHS8715, "Using 1U-5000 Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)" for instructions.

Move the parking brake switch to the OFF position. Turn the engine start switch to the ON position. Open the guard and move the brake retract switch to the ON position. Hold the brake retract switch until the pressure that is shown on the pressure gauge stops rising.
Do not allow oil pressure to drop below 3445 kPa (500 psi) while towing.Partial brake engagement could occur and can result in brake damage. Brakes must be fully released when towed machine is moving.

Note: This can be seen on machines that are equipped with the Vital Information Management System (VIMS).Note: The air pressure in the air system must be at 550 kPa (80 psi) in order to tow the machine. If there is not sufficient air pressure in the air system, the air system can be charged with air from another source.
Do not exceed the air pressure of 830 35 kPa (120 5 psi) or damage can occur to the air system components.
Apply the service brake on the disabled machine in order to check the braking. If the brakes are functioning, release the brakes. Pull the disabled machine with the towing machine. Watch the pressure gauge that was installed in Step 6. Do not continue to tow the machine if the oil pressure is below 3445 kPa (500 psi) .Note: The wheel bearings are not in oil when the final drives are drained. The maximum distance for towing is 30.5 m (100 ft) when the final drives are drained.Note: If the final drive fails, clean the system before you tow the machine.
