The Electronic Control Module (ECM) can detect abnormal operation of the electronic components that are found on the engine. The ECM generates an ACTIVE diagnostic code when an abnormal condition is detected. The condition is also logged in ECM memory. The logged information that is stored in ECM memory is called a LOGGED diagnostic code. This information may be useful to the technician for troubleshooting the problem. A diagnostic code is considered to be intermittent when the condition is logged in ECM memory and the condition is not currently active.In most cases the engine does not need to be stopped because of an intermittent code. However, the operator should retrieve the codes and the operator should reference the appropriate information in order to identify the nature of the event. Take note of the following characteristics of engine performance:
