Setup mode is used to tell the main display module of changes in display modules. The main display module is initially setup when the module is installed on the machine. In order to be able to communicate with the main display module, the attachment display modules are sensed by the initial setup. A diagnostic code is logged when the main display module can not communicate with a display module. When a new attachment display module is added to the Caterpillar Monitoring System, the main display module needs to be setup in order to communicate with the new module. When the main display module enters the setup mode, the six digit display area shows an indicator for the module ("G1", "G2", "t1", and "t2"). The display area also shows the state of each module ("YES" or "NO"). The main display module knows the display modules that are standard for the machine. The main display module also knows the modules that can be added to the machine. Only the indicator for the module(s) that may be added is shown. For example, if no gauge modules are standard, the first indicator for the module that is shown is "G1". The "G1" also indicates that a gauge module may be added. If one gauge module is standard and another gauge module may be added, "G2"is shown. Speedometer/tachometer modules that may be added are shown in the same manner except with a "t" prefix. The "G" indicates the quad gauge module. The "t" indicates the speedometer/tachometer module. The "YES" indicates to the main display module, when the corresponding module is connected. The "NO" is shown on the main display module, when the corresponding module is not connected. Grounding the clear input causes the display to toggle between "YES" and "NO". Opening the clear input stops the display on the current display "YES" or "NO". When "YES" is selected, the main display module tries to communicate over the display data link with the display module that is indicated. If the display module does not respond, the main display module records a service code. If "NO" is selected, the main display module does not try to communicate with the display module.
