Electronics Group Identification Tag(1) Blank ECM Part Number.(2) Software group. Order a blank ECM and the software separately, then Flash the module with the correct software. Each machine ECM has a tag which lists the part number of the blank ECM (1) and the software group (2) that was installed at the factory. For Vital Information Display System or Vital Information Management Stem modules (VIDS/VIMS), two software groups are used. See Service Magazine, February 2, 1998 in the Reference above for the methods of obtaining machine software.
Option 2
The second option is to order a preprogrammed ECM through normal parts channels. The part number of the preprogrammed ECM is given in the latest Parts Manual, SEBP2415-01, 992G Wheel Loader.
Caterpillar recommends the first option. This will reduce the possibility of using noncurrent software/hardware combinations. However, the second option can be used for remote locations that do not have the necessary equipment to Flash Electronic Control Modules.
Certain tools are required to Flash software into 992G (7HR) Wheel Loader machine ECMs. VIMs-PC and 127-9797 Cable Assembly are required for the VIDS/VIMS main module. The other machine modules will require an IBM compatible computer with Electronic Technician (ET) software, 7X-1700 Electronic Tool Group, 7X-1425 Cable Assembly, and a 139-4166 Cable Assembly.
The above two options do not apply to the engine ECM or the VIDS/VIMS interface modules. See the January 20, 1997 Service Magazine in the Reference above for obtaining engine software. The VIDS/VIMS interface module has no serviceable software.
