HOSE AS 2281805 - Caterpillar

Start By:
Remove the fixed axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fixed Axle (Front) - Remove and Install".
Remove the oscillating axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oscillating Axle (Rear) - Remove".

Typical ExampleNote: Make sure that the intermediate housing of the differential is positioned on the top when you locate the axle assembly in Tooling (A) .
Remove the service brake from the intermediate housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Remove".

Attach a suitable hoist and lifting slings to intermediate housing (1). Remove bolts (2) and intermediate housing assembly (1). The weight of intermediate housing (1) is 109 kg (240 lb).

Remove bolt (3) and bolt lock (4) .Note: Adjusting nuts of two different sizes are used in the bevel gear group. Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) in order to remove the adjusting nuts.
Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) in order to remove the adjusting nut (5) .
Remove locating pin (7), sleeve assembly (6) and bearing cup (8) from intermediate housing (1) .

Remove two bolts (9) that are directly opposite each other. Install two 152.4 mm (6 inch) guide bolts in the bolt holes.

Remove remaining bolts (9). Slide pinion gear assembly (10) away from the differential housing in order to install Tooling (B). Attach a suitable hoist and lifting chains to pinion gear assembly (10) .
Use the hoist to remove pinion gear assembly (10). The weight of the pinion gear assembly is 66 kg (145 lb).
Remove the shims and the O-ring seal from the pinion assembly.

Install Tooling (C) on differential assembly (11). Attach a suitable hoist and lifting chains to Tooling (C) .
Use the hoist in order to remove differential assembly (11). The weight of the differential assembly is 109 kg (240 lb).

Turn the remainder of the axle onto the opposite side. Fasten the differential housing to Tooling (A) .
Install Tooling (C) to the rim of axle housing assembly (1). Attach a suitable hoist and lifting chains to Tooling (C) .
Remove bolts (13). Use the hoist in order to remove axle housing (12). The weight of the axle housing assembly is 295 kg (650 lb).
Remove the service brake from the differential housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Service Brakes - Remove".

Remove bolt (14) and bolt lock (15) .Note: Adjusting nuts of two different sizes are used in the bevel gear group. Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) in order to remove the adjusting nuts.
Use Tooling (F) or Tooling (G) in order to remove the adjusting nut (16) .
Remove locating pin (17), sleeve assembly (18), and bearing cup (19) from differential housing (20) .

Use Tooling (D) in order to remove bearing cone (21) .

Turn the differential onto the opposite side. Use Tooling (E) in order to remove bearing cone (22) .
Remove bolts (24) that hold bevel gear (25) in position. Use a press in order to remove bevel gear (25) from the differential.
Remove two spring assemblies (23) from the bevel gear.
