Start By:
Remove the transmission and transfer gears. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Transmission and Transfer Gears - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the oil from the differential and final drive into a suitable container for proper storage or disposal. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change".

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device onto cover (1). The weight of cover (1) is approximately 34 kg (75 lb).
Place a suitable container under cover (1) in order to collect fluid.
Remove nuts (2). Remove cover (1).

Remove O-ring seal (3) from cover (1).

Install Tooling (B) onto axle shaft (4).

Use Tooling (B) in order to move shaft (4). The movement of shaft (4) will expose retaining ring (5).

Use Tooling (C) in order to remove retaining ring (5) from axle shaft (4).
Remove sun gear (6). Remove Tooling (B) from axle shaft (4).

Attach Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device onto axle shaft (4). Use Tooling (D) in order to support axle shaft (4). Slide bearing (7) outward. Remove the suitable lifting device. Use Tooling (D) in order to move axle shaft (4). Move the axle shaft 609.6 mm (2 ft) outward.
Repeat Steps 2 through Step 10 on the opposite end.
