The makeup valve in the rod end of the lift circuit is a vented makeup valve that is also used for the FLOAT function. The makeup valve in the rod end of the tilt circuit is a standard makeup valve.The makeup valves allow the oil from the return line to be added with pump oil. The makeup valves operate when the cylinder rods are retracted quickly, and the pump cannot supply oil to the cylinders in an efficient manner.An orifice (not shown) causes a restriction to the flow of oil back to the oil tank. The orifice makes enough oil available at the makeup valves in order to prevent cavitation in the cylinders.When the pressure in passage (3) or (4) decreases enough, makeup valves (2) move up and oil from passage (1) flows into passage (3) or (4). This adds to the oil in the rod ends of the cylinders.
