Assembly Procedure
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
Before the winch brake is assembled, use the following procedure to determine the correct shim pack thickness for achieving an initial spring compression of 9.14 mm (0.36 inch).

Install piston (1), two belleville springs (18), brake cover (17), and two bolts (16) in brake housing (2).

Turn over the brake assembly and install retaining ring (8). Lightly tap the piston to make sure that the piston is seated firmly against the springs.
Measure dimension (A) from the top of retaining ring (8) to the top of piston (1). Record this measurement.
Remove retaining ring (8).

Install spacer (15) and one plate (13). Install six friction discs (14) and the remaining six plates in alternating order, as shown.
Install brake retainer (11) and retaining ring (8).

Measure dimension (B) from the top of retaining ring (8) to the bottom of spacer (15). Record this measurement.
Subtract dimension (A) from dimension (B). Then, subtract this value from 9.14 mm (0.36 inch). This final value is the shim pack thickness that is necessary to achieve the correct initial spring tension.
Remove all components that were installed for this procedure.

Install spacer (15) in brake housing (2).

Use a screwdriver to align the teeth of friction discs (14) and install seven plates (13) and six friction discs (14) in alternating order. Start with a plate.

Install the necessary thickness of shims (12) in brake housing (2).

Install brake retainer (11) in brake housing (2).

Install retaining ring (8) in brake housing (2).
Install O-ring seal (9) and two O-ring seals (10) in brake housing (2).

Install O-ring seal (4) and seal (5) to piston (1).
Install O-ring seal (6) and seal (7) to piston (1).

Flip brake housing (2) to the other side.
Install piston (1) in brake housing (2).Note: Lightly tap piston (1) to make sure that the piston is seated firmly in the brake housing.
