Introduction
This instruction contains information on how to replace worn hardsurfacing material by adding new hardsurface weld material of equal hardness and wear resistance.Reference: Service Manual, Undercarriage Reconditioning GuidePreparing the Idler Guides and End Collars
1. Remove the front idler from the roller frame. Remove the front idler end collars from the front idler. See the Service Manual.2. Clean all areas to be welded with a pneumatic wire brush or with a metal conditioning disc (see Undercarriage Recondition Bulletin SEBF8540). No dirt, rust, oil or grease can remain on any surface to be welded.Welding Procedure
1. Position the track roller frame so that the front idler guides and the front idler end collars are in a flat position for welding.2. Use a stick electrode (SMAW) or a semi-automatic hardsurface wire (FCAW) of the type listed in the following chart: 3. Deposit stringer beads by pulling ("dragging") the wire. Do not push the electrode. Oscillate the arc slightly to achieve a smooth weld. Two weld passes are necessary for a maximum buildup height of 5 mm (.20"). Overlap each preceding weld bead to prevent any inclusions.4. Be sure to maintain dimensional tolerances when depositing weld material.The following illustrations and charts show areas and weld sizes for hardsurfacing.Front Idler Guides

5. Let welds cool slowly to prevent cracking. Install the front idler end collars on the front idler. Install the front idler into the track roller frame. See the Service Manual.
