If oil leaks freely from the eye end of the rod or from the internal bore of the center tube a problem exists. This leak indicates that the inner tube is cracked or the tube is leaking at the weld eye. Replace the tube with a REMAN or a new Caterpillar part.

If oil leaks from the piston end of the rod around the outside of the center tube, follow the ""Repair Procedure for Swaged Area"".Repair Procedure for Swaged Area
Drain all oil from the rod cavity.
Completely clean all parts of the rod.

Heat the area to be welded with a torch to remove any moisture.Note: Heat the area to a maximum of 149°C (300°F). Use a 349-4202 Infrared Thermometer to measure the temperature.

If additional weld access is needed, some rods can be bored out at the center of the piston end. This step provides increased access for welding. Refer to Table 5 for specifications on maximum bore and depth dimensions for each rod part number.

Use a MIG Welder with ER70-3 GMAW Lincoln L-50 wire or an E7018 SMAW stick. Weld the inner tube to the rod end.
Use a wire brush to clean the weld area.
Clean the rod completely.Note: Inspect and remove all burrs in the oil port passages prior to assembly.
Repeat the rod leak test outlined at the beginning of this document.
If the rod passes the leak test, assemble the cylinder using the proper procedure found in the specific Disassembly and Assembly manual. Test the assembled cylinder according to the process outlined in Tool Operating Manual, NEHT6503, "Procedure for Testing Hydraulic Cylinders Using 9U-6803 Hydraulic Cylinder Tester".
