Remove the camshaft.

Remove bolts (1), thrust plate (2), and idler gear (3).

Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to remove the bearing from idler gear (3).

Remove thrust washer (4), bolts (5 ), and shaft (6) from the cylinder block.

Use Tooling (B) to remove gear (7) from the crankshaft. Installation Procedure

Turn the crankshaft so dowel (8) of the crankshaft is positioned upward.
Raise the temperature of crankshaft gear (7) to a maximum temperature of 233 °C (451 °F). Install crankshaft gear (7) on the crankshaft. Ensure that the side of crankshaft gear (7) with the "V" timing mark is positioned outward. Ensure that the groove (slot) in crankshaft gear (7) is in alignment with dowel (8) on the crankshaft. Ensure that crankshaft gear (7) is in alignment with the idler gear for the oil pump.

Install shaft (6) and bolts (5). Put clean engine oil on thrust washer (4). Install thrust washer (4) on the shaft so that the oil groove is outward, as shown.

Use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to install the bearing in idler gear (3).

Install the bearing so that the bearing joint (arrow) is in the solid area of idler gear (3) . Install the bearing to 0.38 0.25 mm (0.015 0.010 inch) below the face of idler gear (3).
Put clean engine oil on the bore of the bearing.

Install idler gear (3) on the shaft. Ensure that the "V" marks are aligned on idler gear (3) and crankshaft gear (7).
Illustration 10 g00788517Note: Install thrust plate (2) so that the side of thrust plate (2) with the oil groove is toward idler gear (3).
Put clean engine oil on the side of thrust plate (2) that is next to idler gear (3). Install thrust plate (2) and bolts (1) that hold the plate in position. End By:
