Which Generate This Code:MID 087 - Chassis ECMCID 1428 - Requested Gear Command SignalFMI 04 - Voltage Below NormalThis diagnostic code indicates the Chassis ECM detects the requested gear command is shorted to ground. The command signal circuit is a single wire that connects the Chassis ECM to the Drivetrain ECM. The signal wire is (J882-BR) is connected to contact J2-19 of the chassis ECM and contact J2-24 of the drivetrain ECM.Test Step 1. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
Disconnect the J1 harness connector from the Chassis ECM.
Disconnect the J1 harness connector from the Drivetrain ECM.
At the J1 harness connector for the Chassis ECM, measure the resistance from contact J2-19 (wire J882-BR) to all the following sources of ground:
J1-13
J1-23
J1-56
J1-57
J1-70
J2-23
J2-63
Frame groundExpected Result:Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - Each resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - A resistance is less than 5000 ohms. There is a short in the circuit with low resistance. Repair: Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE HARNESSThe keyswitch and the disconnect switch remain off.
Inspect the harness.Clean and inspect the harness connector contacts for corrosion or damage. Check the wire insulation for damage caused by heat, corrosion, or chafing.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each circuit wire.
Reconnect all harness connectors. Verify that the connectors are fully seated and the clips are fastened.
Check for intermittent problems. Use Caterpillar® Electronic Technician (Cat® ET) to perform a wiggle test on the harness.
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Operate the machine.
Determine if CID 1428 FMI 04 is active.Expected Result:CID 1428 FMI 04 is not active.Results:
OK - CID 1428 FMI 04 is not active. Repair: The initial diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection at one of the connectors that was checked. Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - CID 1428 FMI 04 is active. Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. Contact the technical communicator at your Cat® dealer. If the ECM requires replacement, see Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
