3600 Family Of EnginesThis article replaces the article titled "Cylinder Head Stud Installation" on Page 5 of the January 1993 issue.
Incomplete cleaning and sealing of the cylinder head studs can result in stress corrosion cracking and breakage of the studs. Use the following procedure to install cylinder head studs in the 3600 Family of Engines.
Installation Procedure
1. Use a wire brush and 4C-4079 Cleaner Solvent to clean the threads on the studs. Also, use a wire brush and 4C-4079 Cleaner Solvent to clean the threaded holes for the studs in the top of the cylinder block. Use a soft towel or vacuum to remove the cleaning solvent from the studs and threaded holes. Do not use compressed air to remove the solvent from the threaded holes. The compressed air may contain moisture, and/or the compressed air may blow debris from the holes into the cylinder liners.2. Thoroughly clean the holes for the studs and the top of the cylinder block.3. Coat the entire length of each stud with 4C-4774 Water And Temperature Resistant Grease.4. Install the cylinder head studs and tighten to a torque of 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft).5. After installation of the stud, apply a bead of 4C-4774 Water And Temperature Resistant Grease around the stud in the area where the stud emerges from the face of the cylinder block. This will help insure that the counterbore in the face of the cylinder block is full of grease.
