Component Code(s) 6817SUBJECT: THE PIN THAT SECURES THE SIDE BAR PROTECTOR ON THE BUCKET
MAY FAIL ON CERTAIN EXCAVATORS
PROBLEM:
The lateral clearance between the side bar protector and the side plate of the bucket may create a large gap. The excessive gap may cause the pins for the side bar protector to move out of position or break. The side bar protector will detach from the bucket if the pins are broken or removed.
SOLUTION:
If the pins for the side bar protector are broken or the protector becomes detached, install shims between the protector and the side plate of the bucket. The installation of shims will decrease the lateral clearance and reduce the thrust play. The part numbers and the sizes of the shims are listed in Table 1. The side bar protectors and the bucket linkage families are listed in Table 2. Install the shims required in order to decrease the lateral clearance to a maximum of 1.0 mm (0.04 inch). The location of the shims is shown in Illustration 2.

Note: Install the shims between the side plate for the bucket and the side bar protector on the side that is opposite of the retainer.
