Start By:a. remove drive axle (outer only) Some of the following illustrations show a three planetary final drive. The D8N has a four planetary final drive. The procedures are the same. 1. Position the final drive drain plug (3) on the bottom as shown. Remove the drain plug (3), and drain the oil from the final drive. Approximately 14.0 liter (3.7 U.S. gal) of oil will drain out.

This double reduction final drive contains two sun gears. The inner sun gear must be held in place with tooling (A) to prevent it from falling out when the planetary carriers are removed. Step 2 is done to hold the inner sun gear in place.
2. Install tooling (A) to hold inner sun gear (5) in place.
Three bolts [tooling (B)] must be threaded in 25 mm (1 in) to hold the planetary carrier.
3. Remove three equally spaced bolts (2) that hold planetary carrier (1) to hub (4). Install tooling (B) in place of the three bolts. As shown.4. Remove the remaining twenty six bolts (2) that hold the planetary carrier to the hub. 5. Adjust the upper hanger bracket on tooling (C) so distance (X) is 145 mm (5.7 in). Install the lower plate so the spacers are up and toward the vertical leg of the bracket as shown. 6. Use a pry bar, and move planetary carrier (1) out of the hub as far as tooling (B) will permit.7. Fasten a hoist, and install tooling (C) on the planetary carrier as shown.8. The weight of the planetary carrier is 209 kg (460 lb). Remove tooling (B), and remove planetary carrier (1) from the hub. 9. Remove O-ring seal (6) and small O-ring seal (7).
Sun gear (5) will be free to fall when tooling (A) is removed. To prevent possible personal injury, it is necessary to support the gear as tooling (A) is removed.
10. Hold sun gear (5), and remove tooling (A) from the planetary carrier.11. To disassemble the planetary carriers, see Disassemble Final Drives in this module. 12. Remove thrust ring (8) from the retainer. 13. Remove lip type seal (9) from the hub (spindle). The following steps are for the installation of the planetary carriers.14. Use tooling (D) and install lip-type seal (9) in the hub (spindle). The lip of the seal must be toward the inside of the hub (spindle). Put clean oil on the lip of the seal.15. Put a small amount of grease on the backside of thrust ring (8) to hold it in position and install the thrust ring.16. Put inner sun gear (5) in position in the planetary carriers, and install tooling (A) to hold the sun gear in place.18. Install O-ring seal (6) and small O-ring seal (7).19.
