Front view of machine (5) Speed timing sensorsTransmission output speed sensors (4) and speed timing sensors (5) are magnetic pick-ups. An electrical pulse is generated whenever a gear tooth interrupts the magnetic field. This signal is then sent to the relative ECM.

Dash panel (6) Speedometer/tachometer moduleWith the machine moving, transmission output speed sensors (4) generate a signal that is sent to the Power Train/Chassis ECM. The machine ground speed is determined by the Power Train/Chassis ECM and sent to the Caterpillar Monitoring System via the CAT Data Link. The Caterpillar Monitoring System sends a signal to speedometer/tachometer module (6) to display the ground speed.While the engine is running, engine speed timing sensors generate a signal that is sent to the Engine ECM. The Engine ECM calculates the engine rpm. The Engine ECM sends the signal via the CAT Data Link to the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The Caterpillar Monitoring System sends a signal to the speedometer/tachometer module to display the engine speed.
