Cat® data-link circuitThis diagnostic code is recorded when the All Wheel Drive (AWD) ECM loses communication with the messenger over Cat® data-link for 2 minutes. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
An open or faulty connection in the Cat data-link circuit
The ECM has failed. ECM failure is unlikely.
The Messenger has failed. Messenger failure is unlikely.Note: Check the Messenger for correct operation before performing this procedure. If the Messenger is not operating correctly, see Testing and Adjusting, RENR9034 for information on troubleshooting the Messenger. Ensure that CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Test Step 1. CHECK THE DATA-LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
Disconnect the AWD ECM J1 harness connector.
Disconnect the Messenger harness connector.
At the harness connectors, measure the resistance from the ECM connector contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN) to the Messenger contact 6 (wire 893-GN).
At the disconnected harness connectors, measure the resistance from the ECM connector contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR) to the Messenger contact 5 (wire 892-BR).Expected Result:Both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - Both resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - At least one resistance is more than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. INSPECT THE HARNESSThe keyswitch and the disconnect switch remain off. The AWD ECM J1 harness connector and the Messenger harness connector remain disconnected.
Inspect the harness for the following:
Inspect the connectors, pins, and sockets for the following:
Cleanliness
Security
Proper mating
Seal condition
Moisture
Corrosion
Inspect the wires at the connector for the following:
Security
Nicks
AbrasionPerform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the data-link circuit.Note: Take care not to pull the wire out of the connector.
Inspect the wire bundles for the following:
Damage
Abrasion
KinksExpected Result:The harness is in good condition.Results:
OK - The harness is in good condition. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NOT OK - The harness is not in good condition.Repair: Repair or replace the harness. STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODENote: There is a 2 minute interval time on this code.The keyswitch and the disconnect switch remain off.
Reconnect all harness connectors. Verify the following:
Connectors are fully seated.
Connector clips are fastened completely.
ECM connector allen head screws are properly torqued at 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in)
Perform a wiggle test on the harness with the Caterpillar® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool. The wiggle test can detect the following:
Intermittent opens
Intermittent shorts
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the CID 0967 FMI 09 diagnostic code.Expected Result:CID 0967 FMI 09 is not active.Results:
OK - CID 0967 FMI 09 is not active. The diagnostic code was probably caused by a poor connection or short at one of the connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - CID 0967 FMI 09 is active. The ECM may have failed, however, ECM failure is unlikely.Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the failure
