Testing the Fan Motor Speed
Introduction
This test is designed to determine if the fan motor is operating at the correct rpm.
Sudden movement of the machine or release of oil under pressure can cause serious injury to persons on or near the machine.To prevent possible injury, perform the procedure that follows before testing and adjusting the hydraulic system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Test Procedure
Install the Electronic Technician to the access port.
Go to the section for the On Demand Fan Speed Sensor .

Go to the "C9 973" drop box. Highlight "Status Group #5", this will bring up the readouts of the Engine Fan Speed and the Desired Engine Fan Speed.
Working conditions will affect the amount of cooling required by the fan. The fan speed will change rpm to accommodate for the conditions. With the Electronic Technician attached, the computer will inform you of the desired fan speed. The Electronic Technician will also display the actual fan speed on the same screen.
When the fan is in normal operation you shall encounter situations in which the fan speed will spike above the rated 1350 rpm. The trigger point is 1625 rpm before a fault code will issue. Note: The event code will be E241 level 2.For additional information on the electronic technician's codes refer to Service Manual, RENR 9345, "Troubleshooting with an Event Code"
