Personal injury can result when using cleaner solvents. To help prevent personal injury, follow the instructions and warnings on the cleaner solvent container before using.
Before you inspect a part, clean the part thoroughly to remove all debris, paint, and oil.
During cleaning, do not damage machined surfaces.
Use pressurized air to dry parts.Prior to inspection, the stub shaft must be cleaned and free of all debris, paint, and oil residue. Shop solvents and/or bead blasting can be used as needed to clean the stub shaft. Once clean mark the stub shaft according to , SEBF8187, "Standardized Parts Marking Procedures". Marking the stub shaft helps to keep track of the number of hours and rebuilds for the stub shaft.
If any stub shaft has experienced greater than two engine lives or approximately 30,000 hours in one of the off-highway truck applications listed, then it must be replaced at overhaul.
Visual Inspection
Any stub shaft that fails a visual inspection must be replaced. The visual inspection is used as a quick method to identify any stub shafts that show signs of damage and should not be reused. Inspect all surfaces of the shaft for damage that would be considered too extensive for reuse. Inspect for signs of damage, abuse, or misalignment particularly near the base. Any components found with cracks, fretting, or wear indications that can be felt with a fingernail must be replaced.A shaft that has only minor damage can be salvaged with light machine work. Upon completion of the inspection, any burrs or raised areas that will interfere with the installation of the pulley adapter or key must be removed. The following Illustrations will help identify common damage to the stub shaft and provide guidance for reusability.Note: Any damage in the keyway will eliminate the stub shaft from reusability.

Following a visual inspection and potentially machining, the stub shaft must also be inspected by magnetic particle. Any stub shaft that fails a magnetic particle inspection must be replaced. When performing a magnetic particle inspection, focus on the keyway area. If there is an unseen crack within the stub shaft, it will likely be in the keyway. It is normal for inspection material to accumulate in the bottom of the keyway when inspecting. Take extra precautions to ensure that the inspection does not lead
