Accessory Power Converter (APC) system voltage connections (1) Negative 28.5 VDC system voltage circuit (2) Positive 28.5 VDC system voltage/battery charging circuit
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Start the engine and run the engine at high idle.
Use Cat ET or the Message Display to observe the value of the charging system DC output from the Accessory Power Converter (APC).
At the batteries, use a multimeter to check the system voltage between the positive battery post and frame ground.Expected Result:The voltage value of the APC charging system output and the voltage check at the batteries is in the range of 18.0 VDC to 32.0 VDC.Results:
OK - The APC charging system output is in the range of 18.0 VDC to 32.0 VDC. The voltage check at the batteries is in the range of 18.0 VDC to 32.0 VDC. The charging system voltage is correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The APC charging system output and voltage check at the batteries is greater than 32.0 VDC. The charging system voltage is not correct. Repair: The APC charging system voltage is not correct.Check for and resolve any active APC-related diagnostic codes or Event codes that have been activated by the Implement ECM.If no APC diagnostic codes or event codes are active and the Motor, CID 0168 FMI 3 diagnostic code is active, the APC could be causing the problem.Shut down the engine, pull back the protective covers on the positive (+) system voltage connection and the negative (-) system voltage connector. DO NOT DISCONNECT OR MANIPULATE ANY OTHER APC CONNECTORS.Start the engine and run the engine at low idle. Measure the voltage at the APC system voltage positive and negative connectors. the voltage should measure approximately 28.0 VDC. If the voltage is greater than 32.0 VDC, the operation of the APC is not correct.Shut down the engine. Obtain the latest version of operating software for the APC. Flash the latest version of operating software to the APC. This is done in the same manner as flashing software to an ECM. Select APC from the list that is presented. After flashing the latest software to the APC, start the engine and measure the system voltage at the positive (+) system voltage connector and the negative (-) system voltage connector again. If the system voltage is greater than 32.0 VDC, the APC operation is not correct. If the APC charging system is causing the problem, multiple Diagnostic Codes and Event Codes will be active.Contact the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN) for consultation with company personnel concerning this problem. Indicate the steps that have been taken to find this problem.STOPTest Step 2. FLASH THE LATEST SOFTWARE TO THE ECMIt is unlikely that the software program for the Motor ECM is causing this problem, however, flash the latest version of Motor ECM software to the ECM in order to eliminate this as a possible cause.
In order to flash the latest software to the Motor ECM, refer to the Testing and Adjusting,
