Note: Verify that all of the components of the steering cylinder are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.Note: Check all of the components for wear or damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.
Position cylinder assembly (4) in Tooling (A) for assembly.
If necessary, install two plugs (3) and the O-ring seals in rod assembly (11) and cylinder assembly (4) .
Install bearing (12) and seal assembly (13) in rod assembly (11) and cylinder assembly (4). Assemble the bearing so that the fracture plane of the bearing is 90 degrees to the centerline of the rod assembly.
Install O-ring seal (1) and backup ring (2) on head (9) .
Apply 4C-4032 Bearing Mount Compound to the groove for lip seal (17) prior to the installation of lip seal (17). Install lip seal (17), U-cup seal (16), and seal assembly (15) on head (9). Lubricate the sealing lips of lip seal (17), U-cup seal (16), and seal assembly (15) prior to installation.
Install wear ring (14) on head (9) .
Temporarily install head (9) with eight bolts (10) to cylinder assembly (4). Tighten eight bolts (10) by hand. Carefully install rod assembly (11) to head (9) and cylinder assembly (4). Remove bolts (10) that install head (9) and rod assembly (11) to cylinder assembly (4) .
Install seal assembly (7) and wear ring (6) on piston (8) .
Install piston (8) to rod assembly (11). Lubricate the threads of locknut (5). Install locknut (5) that holds piston (8) to rod assembly (11). Tighten locknut (5) to a torque of 6100 610 N m (4500 450 lb ft).
Slide rod assembly (11) and head (9) into cylinder assembly (4) .
Install eight bolts (10) and the washers in order to connect head (9) to cylinder assembly (4) .End By: Install the steering cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Cylinder - Install".
