Remove O-ring seal (3).
Install Tooling (B) in the end of axle shaft (4). Use Tooling (B) to pull axle shaft (4) from the final drive by approximately 710 mm (28 inch).Note: Avoid pulling the inner sun gear (6) outward during axle shaft removal. Doing so can cause the bearing (7) between the inner sun gear (6) and the hub retainer (5) to disengage from the hub retainer (5). For reassembly, the locating diameter of the bearing (7) must be engaged into the locating diameter of the hub retainer (5).

Attach a suitable lifting device to axle shaft (4). The weight of axle shaft (4) is approximately 71 kg (157 lb). Pull axle shaft (4) outward by passing axle shaft splines through brake hub spline and sun gear spline. Center the suitable lifting device as required to balance the weight of axle shaft (4) as the axle shaft is pulled outward. Continue pulling axle shaft (4) outward until axle shaft clears the planetary carrier and remove axle shaft.Note: Avoid pulling the inner sun gear (6) outward during axle shaft removal. Doing so can cause the bearing (7) between the inner sun gear (6) and the hub retainer (5) to disengage from the hub retainer (5). For reassembly, the locating diameter of the bearing (7) must be engaged into the locating diameter of the hub retainer (5).

D 5P-7373 Axle Installer 1 Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Use Tooling (C) to install retaining ring (8). Install retaining ring (8)
Install the axle shaft using the following two steps.

Use suitable lifting device to install axle shaft (4). The weight of axle shaft (4) is approximately 71 kg (157 lb). Install axle shaft (4) through the planetary carrier, and pass the innermost axle shaft spline (spline for the differential) through the final drive sun gear spline. Reposition the suitable lifting device as required to balance the weight of the axle shaft. Continue sliding the axle shaft inward until the axle shaft spline for the differential and spline for the brake hub engage and pass through the brake hub spline and sun gear spline, respectively.

Remove the suitable lifting device and continue sliding the axle shaft inward until the axle shaft spline for the brake hub and spline for the sun gear engage the brake hub spline and sun gear spline, respectively. Continue sliding the axle shaft inward until the axle shaft spline for the differential contacts the differential side gear. Slide Tooling (D)
