The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
Exhaust gas leakage can elevate the air temperature in the engine compartment. Exhaust gas leakage can create an accumulation of soot over time. The location of the leak can elevate temperatures in local areas. This can cause component failures.When the source of the leak is investigated, refer to the following examples of potential leak sources. This will help prevent the replacement of manifold components that may not be the source of the leak.Solution
Avoid contact with hot surfaces. Exhaust piping and engine components become hot during engine operation and cool slowly after engine shutdown. Any contact with hot surfaces can cause severe burns.
Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Inspect all components for visible cracks and/or carbon tracking. Replace any components that have been damaged. Typical leak paths would be between the flanges of the exhaust manifold, the v-band clamps and the coiled portion of the exhaust bellows. Refer to Illustration 1.

(1) Potential leak paths Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly manual for the correct torque values for the v-band clamp nut and the v-band clamp bolt. Refer to Illustration 2.

(2) Nut for the v-band clampCheck for deposits of soot. Inspect the exhaust system components in order to identify the source of the exhaust soot. Refer to Illustration 3.

(3) Exhaust sootLeaks may also appear at the exhaust bellows joint between the exhaust elbow and the turbocharger housing. Refer to Illustration 4.

(4) Check for loose bolts at the flanges for the exhaust bellows (5) Potential leak pathsSpacers are sometimes added behind the mounting bolts. This increases bolt stretch in order to improve clamping. Ensure that the bolts and the spacers are installed correctly. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly manual.

(6) Spacers at the exhaust elbowLeaking components may have a deep red color. Leaking components may have exhaust soot in a localized area.
