Information:
G3508 (4WD, 2JF, 9TG),
G3512 (4KC, 5JD, 7NJ),
G3516 (3RC, 8LD, 4EK) EnginesSUPPLEMENT: 07/01/96Engine News, March 1995, Page 8, "New Vent Lines Groups Prevent Air From Being Trapped Inside Water Cooled Turbocharger Housings"The article is incomplete. Another statement and a Note should be inserted in the Adaptable To section. The correct statement and Note follows:
The venting tubes must be routed with an upward sloping line (with no bends or Loops) to the low pressure side of their cooling system. These new vent lines prevent air, exhaust gases (that might leak into the cooling system), and any steam pocket (that might try to form), from being trapped in these critical high temperature components and cause a premature failure.
Field tests have proven that the turbocharger and wastegate overheating problems can be significantly reduced by correctly installing the vent lines. Illustration 3 (item 25) displays the upward slope necessary to allow trapped air to escape the cooling system.--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Description of Change: New vent lines groups can be added to G3500 Engines to prevent air from being trapped inside the water cooled turbocharger housings. Venting this trapped air will insure adequate cooling of the turbocharger housings. The vent lines groups can be added to engines with customer supplied cooling systems or engines with Caterpillar supplied cooling systems. Adaptable To: The new 116-9850 Vent Lines Group is available for G3508 (9TG), G3512 (4KC, 5JD, 7NJ) and G3516 (3RC, 8LD, 4EK) Engines. Chart A and Illustration 1 identify the components in the 116-9850 Vent Lines Group. The new 116-9850 Vent Lines Group is effective with G3508 (9TG34), G3512 (4KC554, 7NJ44), and G3516 (3RC1045, 8LD28, 4EK291) Engines and adaptable to all earlier engines. The new 122-8619 Vent Lines Group is available for G3508 (4WD, 2JF) Engines. Chart B and Illustration 2 identify the components in the 122-8619 Vent Lines Group. The new 122-8619 Vent Lines Group is effective with G3508 (2FJ316) Engine and adaptable to all earlier engines.
For a customer supplied cooling system, order only the components of the applicable new vent lines group. The customer can run a line from the new vent lines group, using a 9/16JIC female fitting [see tee (14) in Illustrations 1 and 2] to the piping for the jacket water outlet from the regulator housing in his cooling system. The vent line [see Item (25) in Illustration 3] must run at an upward angle to allow trapped air to escape the cooling system. See Gas Engines Application and Installation Guide, Cooling Systems, Form No. LEKQ2460, Pages 16 - 20.
For engine installations with a Caterpillar supplied cooling system, order the components of the applicable new vent lines group and also order the components identified in Chart C and Illustrations 3 and 4. The 7E-7597 Expansion Tank Assembly was improved to allow the mounting of a 113-9479 "Burp" Tank Assembly and a 113-9476 Tube Assembly. These improvements were made to allow for proper ventilation of the turbochargers and wastegates, and to accommodate expansion volume.
