When the engine has run long enough to warm up, move the governor control lever to the SLOW position to bring the engine to low idle speed. Move the marine gear control lever in the desired direction until it snaps into position. If the lever is not in the fully engaged position, excess heat caused by slippage friction will cause rapid clutch wear and gear failure. Allow about two seconds for the clutch to engage fully before moving the governor control lever into operating range. To prolong the life of the clutches reduce the engine speed when reversing the direction of rotation of the marine gear in normal operation. The marine gear should not be reversed at full engine speed except in emergency.When referring to propeller rotation, it is assumed that a person is standing astern of (behind) the boat and faces forward (toward the front). Rotation of the propeller is determined by the direction of rotation of the upper part of the propeller when the boat is moving forward. Thus, a clockwise rotation would define a right-hand propeller, while counterclockwise refers to a left-hand propeller. Moving the marine gear control lever toward the engine shown at (1) will result in clockwise rotation of the propeller. Moving it away from the engine shown at (3) results in counterclockwise propeller rotation. Whether a given rotation is forward or reverse will depend upon the propeller.
