Check only one tie bolt at a time. The nitrogen charge in the hammer may bleed away if more than one of the tie bolts is loosened at one time.
Illustration 2. Location of the components.1. Remove the 4Z8540 Ring from the bolt.2. Remove the 4Z8542 Lock Plate. It may be necessary to slightly rotate the 4Z8538 Nut to align the lock plate and 4Z8519 Cap.3. Use a 5S6084 Socket, a 5S6088 Sledge Socket Wrench, and a sledge hammer to loosen the 4Z8538 Nut until it can be turned by hand.4. Use a 5S6084 Socket, a 2P8261 Adapter, and a 8T9294 Torque Wrench or the equivalents to tighten the 4Z8438 Nut to a torque of 270 N m (200 lb ft).5. Then use a 5S6084 Socket, a 5S6088 Sledge Socket Wrench, and a sledge hammer to tighten the 4Z8438 Nut an additional 1/2 turn.6. Install the 4Z8542 Lock Plate. It may be necessary to slightly rotate the 4Z8538 Nut to align the lock plate and the 4Z8519 Cap.7. Install the 4Z8540 Ring.8. Repeat Steps 1 through 7 for the remaining tie bolts.
