Procedure To Replace A 5C8273 Sprocket Adapter Using A 5C8694 (Former) Carrier Assembly
It may not be necessary to replace the carrier assembly when a sprocket adapter is replaced.
1. A pencil grinder and grinding wheel are needed to make a chamfer on the carrier shaft splines. The grinding wheel can be purchased. See the chart for the type (grade) of wheel to be used. See Illustration 1 for the correct size and shape of the wheel.2. Put a 0.20 mm (.008") chamfer on each side of each tooth of the spline on the carrier shaft. The chamfer must not extend more than 5.0 mm (.20") along the length of the spline, see Illustration 2.
Make sure grinding grit and debris do not get into the final drive during this procedure. The grinding grit and debris can cause extreme wear to the components of the final drive.

Illustration 2. Chamfers on carrier shaft.3. Make an inspection of the final drive group before installing the sprocket adapter. Check for debris in the final drive group (look behind the Duo-Cone seal), see Illustration 3. If debris is found, the 5C8587 Cover and planet carrier assembly must be removed. Flush the debris out of the final drive. Inspect the condition of the planet gears and bearings. If damage or excessive wear has occurred, disassemble and inspect the final drive group. If damage or excessive wear is not found, flush the final drive group and install the planet carrier assembly and the 5C8587 Cover. 4. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the splines of the carrier shaft and sprocket adapter before installation.5. Install the tooling. As the sprocket adapter is pressed on the carrier shaft, use an adjustable scale to check alignment between parts. See Illustration 4. It may be necessary to realign parts during assembly. To make sure of a tight fit, a minimum force of 90 kN (10 tons) is needed to install the sprocket adapter.6. After the sprocket adapter is installed, check for correct fit of the sprocket adapter.

Illustration 4. Sprocket adapter installation.Procedure To Check The Fit Of The Sprocket Adapter During Installation
1. Install the tooling. Very slowly apply pressure until a pulling force of 81 kN (9 tons) is on the sprocket adapter. Release the pressure on the tooling.2. If a force of 81 kN (9 tons) or less, causes movement of the sprocket adapter, replace the adapter.Procedure To Check The Fit Of The Sprocket Adapter Without Any Disassembly
Use the following procedure, to check the fit of the sprocket adapter, before a failure occurs.
1. Loosen the track and raise the side of the machine far enough to remove any load from the sprocket. Block the machine with jack stands or timbers.2. Remove the 2K439 Bolt, 6A7534 Retainer and 5H8624 Seal. Remove two 1D4709 Bolts that are 180° apart. See the illustration for parts location.3. Use the 215 Excavator, Vehicle System Disassembly and Assembly, Form No. SENR2172 on page 174 as a reference to install
