Installation Procedure For The VTC 254 Turbocharger

Check the turbocharger's nameplate for the model. Use the appropriate installation procedure depending on the type of turbocharger. If the model or type on the turbocharger's nameplate reads C254xx-xxxxxx, use the installation procedure for the VTC 254 Turbocharger. If the model or type on the turbocharger's nameplate reads NA 297 or Napier 297, use the installation procedure for the NA 297 Turbocharger.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to the turbocharger support. The weight of the turbocharger support is approximately 147 kg (325 lb). Install the turbocharger support and install the bolts that hold the turbocharger support to the rear housing.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to turbocharger (7). The weight of turbocharger (7) is approximately 400 kg (880 lb). Install turbocharger (7) and install bolts (8) that hold turbocharger (7) to the support.
Place a new gasket between exhaust elbow (6) and turbocharger (7). Apply Tooling (B) to the threads of the bolts and install the bolts in exhaust elbow (6).
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 120 20 N m (90 15 lb ft).
Place the gaskets and tube assembly (4) in position. Install the bolts that hold tube assembly (4) in place.
Install adapter (5) on the turbocharger.

Connect the oil supply tube assembly to the top of the turbocharger. Place the gasket and oil drain tube assembly (3) in position on the turbocharger. Install the bolts that hold the oil drain tube assembly in place.
Connect tube assembly (2) to the turbocharger.
Apply glycerin to the bore of elbow (1).
Place a new seal between the turbocharger and elbow (1). Install elbow (1). Install the bolts that hold the components together.
Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change".
Run the engine for five minutes at the rated conditions. Tighten the bolts for the exhaust elbow again to a torque of 135 15 N m (100 11 lb ft). End By:
Install the exhaust manifold shields. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold Shield - Remove and Install".
