This causes turbine wheel (5) and compressor wheel (1) to turn. The turbine wheel and the compressor wheel are connected to the same shaft. The two wheels rotate together.Clean air from the soot filters is pulled through air inlet (6) by rotation of compressor wheel (1). The action of the compressor wheel blades causes a compression of the inlet air. This compression of the inlet air produces more power because the compression allows the engine to burn additional fuel with greater efficiency.The maximum speed of the turbocharger is controlled by the fuel setting and the high idle rpm setting. The height above the sea level also controls the maximum speed of the turbocharger.
If the high idle rpm or the engine rating is higher than given in the Technical Marketing Information (TMI) for the height above sea level at which the engine is operated, there can be damage to engine or to turbocharger parts. Damage will result when increased heat and/or friction due to the higher engine output goes beyond the engine cooling and lubrication system's abilities.
Bearings (2) and (4) in the turbocharger use engine oil under pressure for lubrication. The oil enters the turbocharger through oil inlet port (3). Then, the oil flows through the passages in the center section of the turbocharger in order to lubricate the bearings. The oil exits through outlet port (8) and the oil returns to the oil pan.
