Testing Before Starting the Engine
Perform the following test before the engine is started:
Disconnect the electrical plug for the main power supply. The green "Ready" LED will be extinguished.
Connect the electrical plug for the main power supply. The red number 1 LED will flash for approximately 30 seconds. The green "Ready" LED will illuminate. This indicates that the detector is operating normally.
Open the inspection cover of the measuring head. After approximately 15 seconds, the green "Ready" LED and the red number 1 LED will be simultaneously extinguished. The red number 14 LED will flash. This indicates that the pressure of the vacuum in the measuring head is too low.
Close the inspection cover. After approximately 15 seconds, the detector will resume normal operation. The green "Ready" LED will illuminate.Testing with Vapor
Only perform the following test when the engine is stopped:
Remove one of the inspection covers for the crankcase in order to access one of the suction pipes.
Fill the plastic bag from the 132-8710 Tool Kit with translucent vapor.
Hold the opening of the bag to a suction pipe.Allow the oil mist detector to sample vapor from the bag for approximately 20 seconds. The response of the oil mist detector depends on these two factors: the density of the vapor and the amount of sampling time. The response also depends on the model of the detector. 191-6505 Oil Mist Detector - An alarm for oil mist will be activated. 149-5143 Oil Mist Detector - An alarm for oil mist will be activated. The detector will search for the compartment of the crankcase that has excessive oil mist. The particular compartment will be indicated on the display window of the detector. However, if the density of the vapor and/or the amount of sampling time is insufficient, an incorrect compartment may be indicated.Testing During Engine Operation
To test the oil mist detector without an external alarm during engine operation, perform the following procedure:Note: The engine is not monitored by the oil mist detector during this performance test.
Open the inspection cover of the measuring head. After approximately 15 seconds, the green "Ready" LED and the red number 1 LED will be simultaneously extinguished. The red number 14 LED will flash. This indicates that the pressure of the vacuum in the measuring head is too low.
Press the "RESET" button. The display will change from a fault indication to a display of opacity.
Use the colored glass from the 132-8710 Tool Kit to filter the infrared light in the measuring track.Note: If the engine has a 149-5143 Oil Mist Detector, the detector will search for the compartment of the crankcase that has excessive oil mist. When the threshold for the alarm is reached, the "Test" indicator will illuminate.
Press the "RESET" button in order to reset the alarm.
Make sure that the inspection cover is securely closed in order to ensure that the engine is monitored by the detector.
Close the inspection cover. After approximately 15 seconds, the detector will resume normal operation. The green "Ready" LED will illuminate.
