Information:
Failure to use correctly ballasted and inflated tires can adversely affect machine stability. This can result in a tip over accident causing injury or death.Ensure that all wheels contain the correct ballast and check the inflation pressure daily.
All four tires contain ballast consisting of a mixture of water and calcium chloride (CaCl). The calcium chloride (CaCl) is an anti freeze additive. If a tire is repaired or replaced the correct quantity and mix of water and calcium chloride must be installed before the machine is put back to work. Machine stability will be adversely affected if the correct ballast is not installed.Check the inflation pressure DAILY with the tires cold and at the same outside temperature in which the machine will operate. Use a Caterpillar 4S6524 or 1P0545 Tire Pressure Gauge or equivalent. The liquid ballast is corrosive and the air gauge should be rinsed with clean water after use.
Use a self attaching inflation chuck and stand behind the tread when inflating a tire. Before attaching the inflation chuck the wheel must be turned until the valve is at the top to maintain the correct level of ballast.
Over or under inflated tires can cause excessive or uneven tire wear or rim damage. Check the pressure if a tire appears to be incorrectly inflated. Keep the valve caps on to prevent dirt from entering the valve stems. Otherwise, valve damage can occur. Have your tire dealer inspect tires with deep cuts or gouges.
When inflating tires in a heated area, make allowances in pressure for cold, outside temperatures. See the Cold Weather Operation and Maintenance Manual Form SEBU5898. Installing Tire Ballast
1. Mix Calcium Chloride (CaCl) powder with clean water in the proportions shown in the table. ADD THE POWDER TO THE WATER. Use a container with an on/off valve and hose.2. Raise the machine until the tire is clear of the ground and support with a suitable stand. Turn the wheel until the valve is at the top.3. If the tire and wheel are newly assembled, the tire must be partly inflated with air to seat the tire bead onto the rim. Deflate the tire.4. Replace the valve core with a special water filling valve and connect the hose from the container to the valve. Position the container with the on/off valve above the tire.5. Open the on/off valve. As the tire fills with liquid air will be discharged through the special filler valve.6. When liquid is discharged through the tire filling valve, close the container valve. The tire is now filled to the correct level.7. Remove the hose from the tire filling valve and replace the tire filling valve with the original valve core.8. Inflate the tire to the correct pressure. Remove the supporting stands and lower the machine to the ground.
