Terminal locations at the air inlet shutoff solenoid (Terminal 1) Return (Terminal 2) Air inlet shutoff
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Unplug the relay at the harness connector.
Measure the resistance between terminal 1 (return) and terminal 2 (air inlet shutoff) of the relay.Expected Result:The resistance is between 5 Ohms and 10 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measures 5 Ohms and 10 Ohms. The relay is OK. Proceed to Test Step 10.
Not OK - The resistance of the relay is out of specifications.Repair: The relay is faulty. Replace the relay.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 10. Check the Signal Voltage at the Relay Connector

Schematic for the air inlet shutoff relay
Unplug the air inlet shutoff relay from the harness connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Proceed to the "Air Inlet Shutoff Relay Output" test on Cat ET.
Check the voltage between terminal 1 (return) and terminal 2 (air inlet shutoff) with a voltage test lamp.Note: The output for the air inlet shutoff system will be active for only one second.
Activate the system for the air inlet shutoff relay.Expected Result:The voltage test lamp illuminates when the test is active. Results:
OK - The voltage test lamp illuminates. The relay is receiving the signal from the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 11.
Not OK - The voltage test lamp does not illuminate. The relay is not receiving the signal from the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 13.Test Step 11. Check the Power Supply to the Relay's Secondary Circuit
Illustration 8 g00850141
Terminal bolts for the air inlet shutoff relay's secondary circuit
Measure the voltage between the +Battery terminal for the relay's secondary circuit and the engine ground.Expected Result:The voltage is 12.0 4.0 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage measured 12.0 4.0 VDC. The relay's secondary circuit is receiving the correct power. Proceed to Test Step 12.
Not OK - The voltage is not 12.0 4.0 VDC.Repair: There is a problem in the wiring between the terminal bolts that are for the relay and the battery. Repair the circuit.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 12. Check the Output Voltage of the Relay's Secondary Circuit
Illustration 9 g00850141
Terminal bolts for the air inlet shutoff relay's secondary circuit
Ensure that all connectors are connected to the wiring harness.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Go to the "Air Inlet Shutoff Relay Output" test on Cat ET.
Check the voltage from the output terminal of the relay's secondary circuit to the engine ground with a voltage test lamp.Note: The output for the air inlet shutoff system will be active for only one second.
Activate the system for the air inlet shutoff relay.Expected Result:The voltage test lamp illuminates when the test is active. Results:
OK - The voltage test lamp illuminates when the test is active.Repair: There is a problem in the wiring between the relay and the air inlet shutoff solenoid. Repair the circuit.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
Not OK - The voltage test lamp does not illuminate when the test is active.Repair: The relay's secondary circuit is not passing power to the air inlet shutoff
