Illustration 1 g02134117Engine compression brake control (1) is located to the right side of the steering column. The control has four positions:DISENGAGED position - When the engine compression brake control is in position (A), the engine compression brake will disengage.FIRST STAGE position - Move the engine compression brake control to position (B) to provide a minimum engagement of the engine compression brake. The engine compression brake will be engaged on two cylinders.SECOND STAGE position - Move the engine compression brake control to position (C) to provide medium engagement of the engine compression brake. The engine compression brake will be engaged on four cylinders.THIRD STAGE position - Move the engine compression brake control to position (D) to provide the maximum engagement of the engine compression brake. The engine compression brake will be engaged on six cylinders. The engine compression brake will engage automatically when the accelerator control is in the LOW IDLE position and the control for the engine compression brake is in any of the following position:
FIRST STAGE position
SECOND STAGE position
THIRD STAGE positionNote: During regeneration, the engine brake is available at low, medium, and high settings. However, a change in engine retarding performance may be noticed. Also, an elevated engine idle speed will be noticed when coming to a stop. If compression brake is on at above high idle engine speed, the regeneration will shut down. (S/N TFF only) If the transmission speed is within 50 rpm of making an upshift, a Warning Category 2 from the Monitoring System will be given. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Monitoring System".The retarder is less effective after an upshift, and is more effective after a downshift. To prevent an upshift, increase the amount of retarder engagement. If the retarder is already on the third stage of engagement, then use the service brakes to slow the machine until a transmission downshifts to a lower gear. Do not apply the service brakes continually on grades.Use the engine compression brake in the first stage when the machine is operating in the following situations:
The machine is lightly loaded and the machine is operated on level ground.
The machine is lightly loaded and the machine is operated on shallow grades. As the engine compression brake control is moved to the second and third stages, the level of engine retarding is progressively increased. Use the engine compression brake in the second and third stages when the machine is fully loaded and the machine is operated on steep grades. Note: The engine compression brake depends on a free flow of engine lubricating oil for correct operation. Before the engine compression brake is used, the engine should be operating at normal operating temperature. The engine compression brake may be automatically disabled on flat ground once the machine slows down and the transmission is in third gear or less. This automatic disablement occurs when the engine compression brake control is in the first, second, or third stage position.During higher speed operation on flat ground, the engine compression brake may be automatically reduced to prevent
