Each extender has a scale which shows how far the extender is moved out from the main screed.Good paving practice requires the balance of the extender width so that the forces against each extender are equalized. Move the left and right extenders out an equal amount.Step 4
Step four is setting the main screed crown to the specifications of the job.Use the crown indicator scale located in the center of the screed to set the crown. Before using the indicator scale, be sure that the indicator scale is properly calibrated to the screed.Step 5
Step five is setting the height of the extenders.

You want to set the height of the extenders so the extenders match the height of the front of main screed. When the extender height is right, there are no transition marks in the mat.Again, make sure that the height indicators have been calibrated to the extenders.Note: The factory default zero setting will have the extender back edge 4 mm (0.16 inch) above the main screed and 6 mm (0.24 inch) above the main screed for the front edge.Step 6
Step six is positioning the starter boards under the screed.
Illustration 6 g02175642Select starter boards whose thickness matches the mat depth and the rate of compaction. Normally, the mat will compact about 6 mm (0.25 inch) per 25 mm (1 inch) of mat depth. For example, to get a 50.8 mm (2 inch) compacted mat, use starter boards which are 63.4 mm (2.5 inch) thick.Use two boards. Position the boards so that both the main screed and the screed extender are supported from front to back. The normal length is between 1 m (3 ft) to 1.2 m (4 ft).Step 7
Step seven removes the slack from the tow point.

Step 8 is adjusting the thickness screws.
Illustration 8 g03540997Thickness screws on both sides of the screed need to be adjusted to establish the main screed angle of attack. When laying down mats up to 15 cm (6 inch) thick, adjust both the screws so the indicator is aligned with zero on the thickness control scale. When the thickness screws are set at zero and the tow point height is set about 4 cm (1.57 inch) above mat thickness, the main screed angle of attack will be approximately 10 mm. When laying mats that are between 15 cm (6 inch) and 30 cm (12 inch), adjust the screws to move the indicator progressively farther into the plus range. Increasing the thickness screw setting increases the main screed angle of attack. The thickness screw must be at near maximum setting for mats 20 cm (8 inch) thick or thicker.Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Thickness Control Screw Adjustment" for more information.Step 9
