5418-12
Engine Fuel Actuator #1 : Failure 3414-12
Fuel Control Valve #2 : Failure The ECM has been notified by the fuel metering valve that an internal failure has occurred.
Replace the fuel metering valve. The fuel metering valve is an electronic actuator. The fuel metering valve works with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) to ensure the correct fuel position during all engine operating conditions. The ECM modulates the fuel metering valve from a fully closed position to a fully opened position.CommunicationsThe ECM and the fuel metering valve communicate via the CAN data link. The ECM sends a command signal to the fuel metering valve. The fuel metering valve sends the actual valve position and internal fault diagnosis information to the ECM.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: A 5418-7 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 5418-12 code is active.
Repair: The fuel metering valve may have detected an internal problem with the actuator electronics. Replace the fuel metering valve.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
2. Check the Fuel Metering Valve for Binding
A. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
B. Shut off the fuel supply.
C. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel metering valve.
D. Visually inspect the internal mechanism of the fuel metering valve.
E. Move the valve while you feel the motion. If the motion is sticky and/or rough, look for the following:
- Dirt and/or contamination.
- Wear of internal components.
Binding
Result: The fuel metering valve is binding due to contamination.
Repair: Clean the fuel metering valve.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
