(H) Weld order
Tack weld backup strip (1) to side plate (A) and baffle plate (D). Remove wire hooks (G) from the backup strip.Note: Do not tack weld the backup strip within 50 mm (2.0 inch) from the ends of the gouge. No crack welding is permitted on track weld beads.
Finish the weld, refer to Illustration 10. Make additional weld passes in order to fill the groove.Note: After each weld pass, grind the weld smooth to form a good weld surface and to ensure weld penetration.
Grind any convex welds smooth.
Install the reinforcement plate, refer to Section "Reinforcement Plate Install Procedure".
Relieve the stress in all welds by needle peening. A wire brush can be used to clean the welded area.
Use Cat authorized paint for painting the welds.Reinforcement Plate Install Procedure

Reinforcement plate install
(2) Reinforcement plate (fabricated part)
(A) Side Plate
(J) Boom
(K) Existing weld
(L) 30 mm (1.18 inch) blank area
(M) Top Plate
(N) Original weld seam between the top plate and the side plate
(P) 20 mm (0.79 inch)
(W1) 10 mm (0.4 inch) fillet weld
Ensure that existing welds (K) are ground smooth and flush before tack welding reinforcement plate (2).
Position and tack weld reinforcement plate (2) with a maximum gap of 1 mm (0.04 inch) between the reinforcement plate and the base plate on side of boom (J). Refer to Illustration 11.
Weld reinforcement plate (2) to the base plate on side of boom (J) using a 10 mm (0.4 inch) fillet weld (W1).Note: Welding is made to extend 30 mm (1.18 inch) at the corner and it is made to connect smoothly. Welding is filled into the 30 mm (1.18 inch) blank area (L).
Grind the finished surface of the welds. Use a brush or an air gun to remove any water, oil, dust, or any weld splatter.Note: Grind all weld pass notches to create a smooth surface.
Apply primer paint for corrosion control. Apply touch-up paint on the area with the repaired welds.Front Assembly
Install the boom, boom cylinder, piping, the stick, and the bucket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly for the manual that is appropriate for your machine.Liquid Penetrant Examination
Materials Required
Refer to Table for part numbers.
Cleaner: Removes dirt before dye application and dissolves the penetrant making possible to wipe the surface clean.
Penetrant: This solution is highly visible, and will seep into openings at the surface of a part with capillary action.
Developer: Provides a blotting action, bringing the penetrant out of the discontinuities and providing a contrasting background to increase the visibility of the penetrant indications.
