New Machines and New Track Groups in Parts Stocks
If the joints on a new machine in your stock or on new track groups in parts stocks have leaks or become dry, see if you can stop the leaks with out the use of any new parts. Use the 5P2420 Lubrication and Test Group in the NOTE near the top of Page 9 in Special Instruction SEHS7029.
If you can not stop the leak(s), install the necessary new parts and put oil in the joints.
Machines in Operation
If the track joints have leaks or become dry after the machine has been used for a length of time, do not put oil in the joints or make any repairs. But, if the wear inside the dry joint shows that total wear will be more than the Special Wear Limits in the Custom Track Service (CTS) Handbook, Form PEKP6400, on Pages 86, 108, and 137, put in a new pin to make the track pitch correct. This will also make the joint stronger.
Be sure to write a Service Report or CTS Report and put a copy of it in the machine history folder. If a warranty claim is sent later to Caterpillar, a copy of this Report must be fastened to the claim.
Also, at the time you find any leak(s) or dry joints, send a copy of the Service Report or CTS Report immediately to Caterpillar. This gives Caterpillar more information on performance of these parts in different conditions. When the bushings are turned, use new parts in place of old parts that do not meet the visual standards in the Guideline For Reusable Parts, Form SEBF8022.
