TRACTORS
D8N (5TJ)Problem:
When the "two pump" D8N (serial number prefix 5TJ) replaced the 9TC prefix D8N, we introduced halogen lights and a bigger track shoe section. When doing this, the track shoe grouser to fender clearance was reduced. Tractor serial numbers 5TJ1-2024 have 29mm less clearance than the 9TC units with MS shoes and 37 mm less clearance with ES shoes. Effective with 5TJ2025, clearance was increased by 9mm. with redesign of the light bracket.Because of this reduced clearance, the track shoe grousers may contact the fender more easily, damaging the fender lights.Violent directional changes, without the use of the decelerator, together with a track that is adjusted too loose, will aggravate the problem.Solution:
The following steps should be followed to solve the problem if fender light damage occurs...1. Check for correct track adjustment. The specification is 115 10 mm.2. Check for correct tractor operation. The decelerator should be used when making direction changes between forward and reverse to prevent the track from "whipping".3. Check for debris riding up on the tracks and getting trapped between the track and fender.4. If necessary, modify the lamp guards as explained in Service Magazine 14 November, 1994.5. If light damage still occurs after having checked and corrected the above points, the fender lights can be relocated to the top of the ROPS using the custom light relocation kit, part number 116-4105 for tractors with cabs and 130-9034 for tractors with O-ROPS. These kits must be ordered through the machine orders system as a miscellaneous order, NOT through parts dept.COSA CONSTRUCTION, MINING AND QUARRY PRODUCTS COPYRIGHT 1995 - CATERPILLAR - ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
