Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Housing (Front) - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Set the No. 1 piston to top center on the compression stroke. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Finding Top Center Position for No. 1 Piston".

Mark the orientation of each of the gears for installation purposes.
Remove bolts (4), bolt (6), and retaining plate (7).
Remove idler gear assembly (3), idler shaft (2), and thrust plate (1) from the cylinder block.
Use Tooling (A) to remove bearing (5) from idler gear assembly (3). Note: Removal of the engine oil pan may be necessary in order to remove the idler gear assembly for the engine oil pump.
Remove bolt (8), retaining plate (9), and idler gear assembly (10).
Check the condition of the bearing in idler gear assembly (10). If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the idler gear assembly.
