Personal injury can result from contact with refrigerant.This system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Heat should never be applied to a charged system. Contact with refrigerant can cause frost bite. Keep face and hands away to help prevent injury.Protective goggles must always be worn when refrigerant lines are opened, even if the gauges indicate the system is empty of refrigerant.Always use precaution when a fitting is removed. Slowly loosen the fitting. If the system is still under pressure, release it slowly in a well ventilated area.Personal injury or death can result from inhaling refrigerant through a lit cigarette.Inhaling air conditioner refrigerant gas through a lit cigarette or other smoking method or inhaling fumes released from a flame contacting air conditioner refrigerant gas, can cause bodily harm or death.Do not smoke when servicing air conditioners or wherever refrigerant gas may be present.Before any checks of the air conditioning and heating system are made, move the machine to a smooth horizontal surface. Lower all implements to the ground. Make sure the transmission is in neutral or park and that the parking brake is engaged. Keep all other personnel either away from the machine or where they can be seen.
Do not use solvents, compressed air, etc., in order to clean any of the system components.
It is necessary to flush the system if a component failure causes metal particles or other foreign material to be circulated through the system.Debris in the system can cause a compressor to fail repetitively. Use the following procedure in order to flush the system.
Determine the type of refrigerant that is in the system.Note: Use a refrigerant identifier (analyzer) in order to prevent refrigerant that is not R-134a from contaminating tools.
Remove the compressor.
Remove the in-line dryer and the accumulator.
Flush the remainder of the system. Use the 153-9032 Air Conditioner Flushing Unit, the 153-9033 Adapter Kit, and the 153-8538 Refrigerant Flushing Solution .Note: Further instructions are provided with the Air Conditioner Flushing Unit .
Replace any failed component.
Install a new in-line dryer and install a new accumulator.
Install a new compressor.Note: A new compressor comes from the Caterpillar parts department with the correct amount of refrigerant oil.
Evacuate the system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Refrigerant System - Evacuate".
Charge the system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Refrigerant System - Charge".
