All Products With Electric Starting Motors (12, 24, 32, 64 Volt Systems)Starter and battery life can be reduced, and sometimes immediate damage results from overcranking an engine (prolonged engagement of the starter motor). The following is a list of limitations agreed to by all of Caterpillar's starter suppliers. High parasitic cranking loads and/or incorrect engine oil viscosities may still cause starter damage even when following these guidelines. Even though the batteries (or battery) will become discharged during this procedure and require boost-starting, the same guidelines apply.
1. Crank the engine for no more than 30 seconds.2. Wait for 2 minutes.3. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 six times, for a total of seven 30-second cranking cycles.4. Wait for 30 MINUTES.5. Do Step 1 again.6. Do Step 2 again.7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 three times, for a total of four 30-second cranking cycles.8. Wait for 30 MINUTES.9. Do Steps 5 through 8 as needed.
